Starting the Day off Right

So you’ve probably noticed that my recent blog posts have all been tailored to accomplishing your health goals for 2016. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks focusing on the resources we have around us, but I want to encourage you to start the day off right by stretching before you’ve even gotten out of bed.

Instead of hitting the snooze button, use that extra couple of minutes to do my three favorite morning stretches.

  1. Knees to Chest: Lie flat on your back and pull your knees into your chest interlocking your fingers at the tops your knees. This will loosen your lower back, hamstrings and glutes. Hold this for 10 seconds. Repeat with just the left leg for another 10 seconds, and the right leg for 10 seconds as well.

  2. Spinal Stretch: Sit upright with your legs crossed and raise your arms toward the ceiling. This is a great way to get the blood flowing and wake your body up. Lace your fingers together and raise your hands above your head with your palms facing upward. Elongate your spine and feel the stretch in your arms and rib cage. Hold this for 10 seconds.

  3. Neck Stretch: Our necks have a tendency to stiffen up while sleeping, so it’s super important to stretch your neck each morning. Sitting upright with your legs crossed use your hand to guide your right ear over your to right shoulder and hold for 20 seconds. Don’t force the stretch to go past where you feel comfortable. Repeat on the Right side. Relax for a moment then roll your shoulders toward your back and then toward your front. Lift them up toward your ears. Repeat this sequence 3 times.

Do you stretch in the morning? Which stretches have you found to be helpful? Let me know in the comments!
