Chiropractic Will Keep You Surfing

We are lucky enough to live in an area surrounded by great surf. If you enjoy this sport you also know that it typically means having a sore back. For which you might stretch, seek a massage, or seek out a chiropractor.

But there’s been a more recent trend of surfers seeking chiropractic care to enhance their performance as opposed to treating a specific injury or pain.

Chiropractic can help surfers improve their flexibility, alignment, muscle control, strength, etc. So if you enjoy surfing make sure to come in for an adjustment before you hit the beach. In addition here are a few things you can do to avoid the back pain often associated with surfing.

  1. Loosen up your hips: Your hip flexors when tight cause unnecessary stress on your spine. Do some lunges before getting into the water to loosen up your hip flexors. Hold each lunge for 30 seconds and be sure keep your abdominals tight.

  2. Stretch your glutes: Properly functioning glutes keep your pelvis balanced and reduce the load on your spine while paddling on your board. Do some hip raises by laying flat on the ground and using your glutes to lift your hips up off the ground. Try for 5-10 reps raising your hips as high as possible without arching your lower back.

  3. Engage your core: Strong abdominals help to keep unnecessary pressure off of your back. Whether you are surfing or not it is important to keep your core strong.

If you do feel tight after surfing come in to have your spine checked. It is better to have an injury treated ASAP so that it does not develop into something worse. Even if your back feels fine, start seeing a chiropractor regularly so that you can surf with greater ease.
