4 Tips to Stay on the Move at Work

You’ve probably read dozens of articles about the importance of staying active during the work day because sitting is so bad for you. Everyone has different advice on ways to get moving during your work day.

I get asked this question from patients a lot, so I wanted to share my advice with all of you. It is very important that you implement standing, pacing, and moving throughout the day to actually make a change in your body. Here are some of the things I commonly suggest:

  1. Use the stairs! If your building has an elevator then there are also stairs. If you take the stairs on your way in and out and on your way to and from lunch you will notice that you will still have energy by the end of your work day.

  2. Speaking of lunch, spend some of that time walking. It probably only takes you 15-20 minutes to actually eat your lunch. Spend the rest of that time walking. You don’t need to power walk or anything, just get your blood flowing. It will keep you energetic for the rest of your workday.

  3. Invest in a standing work station. This might be hard to accomplish depending on your work environment, but a standing desk will make a huge difference for you. There are even stations that rotate between standing and sitting so that you can switch between the two.

  4. Get an exercise ball. If a standing work station is not doable, try sitting on a medicine ball. I know sitting is bad, but on an exercise ball you are keeping your core active.

Try incorporating all of these tips throughout your work day and see what kind of a difference you notice. In addition, start seeing a chiropractor regularly to keep your body functioning at it’s optimal level.
